The Pujiang Innovation Forum: Shanghai is the first option for Scientist to choose work place
2018-06-25

“Yangtze River Delta urban agglomerations are ranked first overall of the world's major urban agglomerations considering the area, population and economic growth rate. However, the comprehensive ranking of GDP per capita, per capita GDP and per capita patents is relatively backward.” Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Wu Zhiqiang, Vice President of Tongji University, this afternoon, at the "Pujiang Innovation Forum —— 2018 International Science,Technology and Innovation Think Tank Fourm", using his team's innovative development big data research results over the years, the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration is an excellent international science and technology innovation. The research depth and the enhancement of innovation are the top priorities of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration.

The two-day seminar, hosted by the Shanghai Institute for Science of Science, featured the “Science and Technology Innovation Center: Urban Agglomeration and Future Opportunities”, inviting experts from science and technology innovation think tanks from around the world to share about the global innovation center cities and the development experience and research of urban agglomerations provide suggestions for collaborative innovation in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration.

The global status of the Yangtze River Delta

“The theoretical research of global cities has gone through half a century. In the global urban network, the winner cities bear the important transnational economic functions, while the ordinary cities are the supporting roles. However, in the formation of global urban areas, besides the winner cities, the development path of ordinary cities must be taken into consideration, together with the different opportunities and challenges that this multi-path brings to different cities. And all together makes the era of urban areas.” Wu Zhiqiang revealed that his team has drawn 13810 cities trees worldwide at the beginning of the year. The city tree database, surpassing the records of the largest city database in the United States. The growth types of these urban trees can be summarized as germination, sputum, growth, expansion, maturation, decline, and regional. Based on this, the future urban development can be deduced.

These studies can also help us to accurately understand and deeply learn the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration. The relevant data has accumulated more than 1.24 million pieces of 14 categories, forming 7159 analysis units. In the Yangtze River Delta's innovative gravitational network, Shanghai-Suzhou is the most gravitational line, followed by Shanghai-Hangzhou. Compare the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration with the domestic Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration, the Greater London region, the Southern European Golden Banana, the Northeastern United States, the Northwestern Gulf region, and the Kanto-Kansai region. The short board is equally obvious. He pointed out that the future global status of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration depends on the global resource allocation power outside the group, the intelligent synergy between the cities within the group and the wisdom combination of innovation elements.

Luo Dajin, director of the Shanghai Institute for Science of Science, also said that the Yangtze River Delta has become China's most leading innovation zone. According to a joint investigation by our Institute and Springer Nature Publishing Group, Shanghai is the Chinese city that scientists most want to work in, and the city that is most willing to live is Hangzhou. He pointed out that the factor circulation mechanism is not perfect, the resource sharing needs to be optimized, the system policy is not well connected, and the open radiation pattern is to be expanded, which is the main demand and challenge of the current coordinated innovation in the Yangtze River Delta region.

  The magic of Silicon Valley

Speaking of innovative urban agglomerations, Silicon Valley is benchmark model that are often used for discussion. However, Russell Hancock, chairman and CEO of Silicon Valley co-investment, admitted at the seminar that there are many misunderstandings about Silicon Valley. In fact, there is no specific area on the map that is designated as Silicon Valley. There is no clear definition about Silicon Valley. The rise of Silicon Valley is not an easy-predicted phenomenon. “There are always people wondering what is the magic power? I want to say that the magic lays in continuous innovation.”

In today's world, the new technological revolution and global industrial transformation are gestating, which has had a major impact on the world economic structure and competition pattern, and the development of cities and urban agglomerations is undergoing profound changes. Shanghai is in the process of implementing an innovation-driven development strategy and accelerating the construction of a technological innovation center with global influence under the situation of integration in the Yangtze River Delta. At the seminar, from the Development Research Center of the State Council, China Science and Technology Development Strategy Research Institute, Science and Technology Strategy Consulting Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tongji University, East China Normal University, China and Globalization Think Tank, UNESCO, Economic Cooperation and Development Organization Experts from think tanks such as the Moscow Innovation Agency and Israel's Curium have opened up a brainstorm about innovative ideas.
