Professor Tom Stafford of the University of Sheffield Guested the Expert Forum of the Shanghai Institute for Science of Science

  On the afternoon of September 9, 2024, the 7th issue of the 2024 (the 77th issue)expert forum of 2024 was held in conference room 517 of our institute. Professor Tom Stafford from the University of Sheffield was invited to deliver a special report on "Experiments with the Funding of Research", which was presided over by Deputy Director Chen Haipeng (in charge of the work). 

  Professor Stafford used big data visualization analysis to discuss how to judge the funding fields and objects, what factors affect the accuracy of funding decisions, and how to make more intelligent funding decisions. Combined with years of theoretical accumulation and research experience, he shared his overall understanding and thinking on scientific research funding. 

  Subsequently, the researchers of our institute conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions with Professor Stafford on the differences between the sources of research funding units in China and the UK, and their influence on the way of funding research. 

  Tom Stafford, PhD, Cognitive Neuroscience, Professor at the University of Sheffield, is an expert in cognitive science. His research focuses on managing risk and bias, skill learning, and the psychological processes of complex decision-making. He is also associate editor of The Psychologist and a former freelance writer and researcher for the BBC.
