From June 30 to July 2, 2025, a delegation from the Shanghai Institute for Science of Science (SISS) was invited to attend the Metascience 2025 Conference hosted by University College London. Recognized as a premier global forum in the field of Science of Science, the conference convened over 800 experts and scholars from 62 countries, representing research management bodies, science funding organizations, international journal publishers, universities, and innovative research institutions. UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Chief Executive Sir Patrick Vallance delivered the opening keynote. Research fellow Li Hui and Research associate Wu Qi from SISS were invited to present thematic reports in parallel sessions.
During the presentation session, Li Hui delivered a report titled “The Rise, Decline, and Resurgence of Science of Science Studies in Shanghai, China”, demonstrating the critical role of Science of Science in shaping China’s scientific policy-making and decision-making processes while showcasing the profound academic heritage and innovative capabilities of SISS. Wu Qi introduced Virsci – a scientific simulation platform jointly developed by SISS, the Shanghai AI Innovation Center and partner institutes, exemplifying SISS’s exploration of "AI + Science of Science".
This participation in the Metascience 2025 Conference extended the impact of the Shanghai Forum on Science of Science hosted by SISS, strengthening global connectivity and scholarly exchange. Delegates from the Strategic Planning Research Office and Industrial Innovation Research Office engaged in in-depth discussions with international delegates on cutting-edge topics such as future research trajectories and methodological innovations in Science of Science, laying groundwork for further expanded international collaboration.
