On June 24, the "Pujiang Innovation Forum – Shanghai Forum on Science of Science · 2026 International Science, Technology and Innovation Think Tank Forum" kicked off in Shanghai. Centered on the theme Crossing Boundaries: Co-creating Future Industries in a Period of Transformation, the event was guided by the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality and the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development, and hosted by the Shanghai Institute for Science of Science. Over 300 experts and scholars from home and abroad attended the forum.
Liu Dongmei, General Chair of the forum and Secretary of the Party Committee & Research Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development, delivered a keynote speech. She elaborated on the internal logic of science and technology empowering future industries from three dimensions: the underlying mechanism of cutting-edge technologies driving future industries, the operation mechanism of cross-boundary support, and strategic pathways to build a cross-boundary support system. Liu pointed out that the advancement of future industries driven by frontier technologies is not one-way transmission, but a systematic, complex co-evolution and paradigm-shifting transformation. She stressed that future industries represent the field with the highest requirements and toughest challenges for integrated scientific and industrial innovation, yet also the most urgent to develop. Close attention should be paid to technological intersection zones, the bridging role of pilot-scale platforms and proof-of-concept centers, as well as the empowerment of enterprises and cultivation of future industrial ecosystems.
Jiang Ge, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, addressed the opening ceremony. He stated that Shanghai relies on sci-tech innovation to spearhead industrial innovation, which calls for accelerated development of think tanks and sustained research in the science of science with forward-looking planning. He emphasized that think tank research should maintain a global perspective, establish links and collaboration with top international institutions and experts, and jointly expand the frontier of innovation research.
During the forum, nearly 20 distinguished scholars delivered speeches and panel discussions on strategies and practices for cross-boundary integration of future industries, offering rigorous, objective research insights to boost strategic agility in fostering future industries. Speakers included Zhang Yicheng, Member of the European Academy of Sciences; Wang Yuan, Former Executive Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development; Lu Xiao, Vice President & Research Fellow of Institutes of Science and Development, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Rafael Popper Villarroel, Director, Futures Diamond (United Kingdom), Chief Scientific Advisor, Technology Partners Foundation (Poland); Shahrizal bin Shahrudin, Director of the Malaysian Science and Technology Information Centre; Djerdj Horvat, Project Manager of Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI; Hwanil Park, Senior Research Fellow of the Science and Technology Policy Institute, Republic of Korea; Péter Mogyorósi, CEO of LC Innoconsult; Xiong Hongru, Research Fellow of the Development Research Center of the State Council; Rui Mingjie, Director of the Research Center for Enterprise Development and Management Innovation, Fudan University, First-Class Professor; Chen Qiang, Distinguished Professor with Tenure, School of Economics and Management, Tongji University, Executive Director, Shanghai Research Center for Industrial Innovation Ecosystem; and Li Hui, Research Fellow of the Shanghai Institute for Science of Science.
To advance the development of the Shanghai (Yangtze River Delta) International Science and Technology Innovation Center, the Shanghai Institute for Science of Science, Jiangsu Information Institute of Science and Technology (Jiangsu Academy of Science and Technology for Development), Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of Zhejiang Province, and Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of Anhui Province (Anhui Science and Technology Archives) reached a regional consensus on cross-boundary collaborative innovation based on existing partnerships. The four institutions will deepen joint think tank research, produce high-quality think tank outputs, policy solutions and professional talent to serve major national sci-tech innovation strategies.
As a themed sub-forum of the Pujiang Innovation Forum, the International Science, Technology and Innovation Think Tank Forum has been successfully held for 11 consecutive sessions and built the brand "Shanghai Forum on Science of Science". It aims to create an international exchange platform with global vision, deepen research on the underlying logic of new rounds of technological and industrial revolution, and better reveal trends and rules of scientific and technological progress.
